What Is Hypnotherapy, and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that is intended to have a positive influence on the patient while they are in a state of unconsciousness, referred to as hypnosis. A trained hypnotist relies on guided relaxation techniques to conjure feelings of extreme concentration, relaxation, and/or focus to reach a heightened level of awareness. The trance the patients are under is similar to being completely engrossed in a television show, book, music, their own thoughts, or meditation. While in this state, clients are able to turn their focus inward and utilize what is already inside them to make modifications or reclaim control over parts of their life.

This type of therapy is frequently used to provide assistance with psychotherapy, since the tranquil state of mind is able to get people to learn more about themselves. They are given the opportunity to explore emotions or memories that are concealed from their conscious mind. The clients can work through painful and suppressed feelings that they would have otherwise not know about. The adjustment in consciousness can provide patients with the tools to better handle encounters outside of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is able to put people in a comfortable state of being that is more conducive to suggestion and discussion.

There are several techniques that can be utilized for hypnotherapy, of which the hypnotherapist will determine the correct method for their patient. The two most popularly used are suggestion therapy and analysis. Suggestion therapy is dependent on how well the client is able to respond to the hypnotherapist’s suggestions while in the hypnotic trance. This approach is commonly used as a means to curb unwanted behaviors such as smoking, nail biting, over-eating, or gambling. It has also shown to be beneficial for treating pain, and increasing positive behaviors including confidence or motivation. This type is better suited for simpler problems and can be used to cure many phobias.

The practice of analysis hypnotherapy is also known as regression therapy. Hypnotherapists rely on this method to discover the psychologic root of the issue that is not accessible to the conscious mind. This has been found to be advantageous for cases of social anxiety, past trauma, or depression. Hypnotherapy is able to dig into the mind of the client to retrieve the repressed memories or early developmental trauma that could be responsible for the problematic behavior or psychological conditions. This is not intended to fix or change the behaviors of patients, but rather locate the cause that can be subsequently treated through psychotherapy.
