Using Food to Cope

Many people use food to cope with negative feelings. Whether those feeling are a result of being sad, lonely, bored, depressed, angry, frustrated or anxious - it really doesn't matter at all.

Eating when we are not hungry makes it take so much longer to lose excess weight. By turning to food for comfort when we feel down (or any negative feelings), we have learned that that comfort is very short-lived. It does not solve any long-term problems or issues.

Emotional eating only increases your issues by adding on excess weight and is just a temporary distraction.

The key is to look for healthier ways to distract yourself. Journaling gets those feelings out of your head and onto paper and you may be able to identify your triggers. Calling a friend, reorganizing a drawer or closet, or taking your dog for a walk are also great distractions.

You've heard, "If you don't buy it, you won't eat it" and this is a very true statement!  So, clear your pantry and refrigerator of unhealthy foods. Stock up on things that are healthy for those in between meal snacks.

Accept yourself as the wonderful, unique and creative person that you are. Also, accept that your emotions (positive and negative) are an essential part of your whole personality.

Instead of eating to fill an emotional void, find constructive ways to deal with your feelings!
