From the time we are born until we are about 8 or 9 years old, our subconscious mind is forming. We take in everything and don't question anything. The way we feel about ourselves, our worth, so to speak, comes from primary caregivers and the world in which we live. When we are told things like, "You're not good enough" or "You need to try harder" or "You'll never amount to anything", the way we feel about ourselves is pretty low.
Picture in your mind that self-esteem (the way we feel about ourselves) is like the roots of a tree. The branches of this tree are our confidence in ourselves. The leaves are our motivation. Now that you have that picture - think about what happens when those roots get cut or don't get water. That tree starts to die. So, what happens to the branches and the leaves? They also begin to die or disappear. When we can't see our own worth or don't feel good about ourselves (low self-esteem), it becomes increasingly difficult to make any kind of positive change in our lives. We aren't motivated to make the positive change most likely because we don't think we can make the change (low self-confidence). When we don't have the confidence, how motivated are we to try and make the change?
